The 03rd Session of the Assembly of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) was recently held from 02nd to 05th May 2023 at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco. This assembly was a momentous occasion, bringing together representatives from 98 member states of the IHO to discuss issues and advances in hydrographic science and technology.
Among the attendees was Captain EMA Bandara, who represented Sri Lanka at the assembly. The participation of Sri Lanka in the assembly was significant, as it marked a major milestone for the Sri Lanka Navy. During the assembly, the Sri Lanka Navy Hydrographic Service was recognized, as the Hydrographic Authority of Sri Lanka in front of the hydrographic fraternity worldwide.
The assembly was also an opportunity for Sri Lanka to engage with foreign delegations and discuss possible areas of collaboration. The discussions with foreign delegations were highly productive, with several countries expressing their willingness to support capacity building and hydrographic training in Sri Lanka. This is a significant development, as it will enhance Sri Lanka's capability to provide accurate and up-to-date Nautical charts to the international maritime community, which in turn will contribute to maritime safety and security in the region.
