Sri Lanka Navy Hydrographic Service Officers Attended UNCLOS Lecture at LKI

Sri Lanka Navy Hydrographic officers recently attended a distinguished lecture titled “UNCLOS: The Past and the Future”, hosted by the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute (LKI) of International Relations and Strategic Studies. The event was held on 16 February 2026 at the Lighthouse Auditorium at the LKI, bringing together diplomats, policymakers, researchers, and maritime professionals for an engaging discussion on the evolution of the Law of the Sea.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Hiran Jayewardene, the only living member of Sri Lanka’s original delegation involved in drafting the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Drawing on first-hand experience, he provided rare insights into the origins, spirit, and historical context behind the Convention, highlighting its continuing relevance to contemporary maritime governance.

The session was moderated by former Chief Hydrographer to the SLNHS, Rear Admiral Y.N. Jayarathna (Retd), who guided an interactive discussion and Q&A segment that encouraged dialogue on emerging challenges and future directions in ocean governance and international maritime law.
