SLNHS Enhances Hydrographic Knowledge of KDU Undergraduates

Sri Lanka Navy Hydrographic Service (SLNHS) conducted theory and practical sessions to enhance the knowledge of Hydrography for the undergraduates of the Department of Spatial Sciences, Faculty of Built Environment and Spatial Sciences, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (Southern Campus) on 28th and 29th April 2026.

On the first day, students participated in practical sessions held at the Dikkowita Fishery Harbour, where they were introduced to field-based hydrographic survey techniques including data acquisition and the use of survey equipment. The hands-on experience provided valuable exposure to operational aspects of Hydrographic Surveys.

The second day’s programme was conducted at the SLNHS office, focusing on theoretical aspects such as hydrographic survey planning, data processing and the fundamentals of nautical chart production. The sessions also highlighted the importance of modern hydrographic practices in supporting maritime activities and spatial data applications.

The students showed keen interest throughout both theory and practical sessions, demonstrating active participation and enthusiasm reflecting the growing interest in Hydrography among university undergraduates.
