The 25th International Conference of the North Indian Ocean Hydrographic Commission (NIOHC) officially commenced in the port city of Chattogram, bringing together international delegates to advance regional hydrographic cooperation, maritime security, and sustainable blue economy frameworks.
Representing the Sri Lanka National Hydrographic Office (SLNHO), a delegation comprised of Rear Admiral MDK Wijewardana, WWV, RWP, RSP, USP, ndc, psc, and Commander (H) LDAS Kumara, psc, attended the prestigious event to reinforce Sri Lanka's strategic and technical commitments to regional maritime governance.
The three-day plenary session was formally inaugurated by Bangladesh's Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral M Nazmul Hasan.The conference features a robust gathering of global hydrographic leaders, including representatives from Member States—Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand—alongside Associate Members including Australia, France, Oman, Mauritius, Seychelles, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Additionally, Russia, Malaysia, and Sudan are in attendance as Observer States, supported by technical experts from prominent international organizations and commercial hydrographic industries.
Over the course of the three-day conference, participating delegations were tabling their respective National Reports, detailing recent surveying milestones, technological achievements, and future operational roadmaps. Central to the agenda are high-level deliberations aimed at streamlining cross-border technical cooperation, regional data synchronization, and funded capacity-building assistance across the North Indian Ocean region.
