Navy Hydrographic Service Conducts Field Training for Ocean University Undergraduates

The Sri Lanka Navy Hydrographic Service conducted a field practical training programme for undergraduate students of the Department of Oceanography, Ocean University of Sri Lanka, on 21st July 2026. The programme provided students with practical exposure to hydrographic survey planning, data acquisition, data processing, and the fundamentals of nautical chart production through hands-on field activities at the Dikkowita Fishery Harbour.

During the programme, the undergraduates gained hands-on experience in operating professional hydrographic survey equipment, including the Single Beam Echo Sounder (SBES), Side Scan Sonar (SSS), GPS receivers, Total Station, Digital Level, and Sound Velocity Profiler (SVP), while processing the collected data using HYPACK software. They also observed and participated in real-time hydrographic surveying under the guidance of experienced Navy hydrographic surveyors, enhancing their practical knowledge of modern hydrographic survey techniques.
